Chemistry Fractionating Column - High-Efficiency Separation Equipment
The chemistry fractionating column from Xi'an Bioland Instrument is a high-quality distillation machine designed to precisely separate liquid mixes based on differences in their boiling points. Our columns can reach HETP values as low as 10cm, which is made possible by PID-controlled temperature management and a better balance between vapour and liquid. Each unit comes with a high borosilicate glass 3.3 construction and a 5L to 100L capacity. For acidic uses, a SUS316L stainless steel jacketing is available as an option. The system works well in an atmosphere as low as 0.1mbar and can handle temperatures from room temperature to 300°C. Our product is certified by CE, ISO, and GMP, and it works well for separating natural products, processing petrochemicals, and purifying medicinal APIs.
With its clear glass tower form, you can see how the distillation is going in real time. The method combines several imaginary plates by precisely packing them with things like Raschig rings, glass springs, and rings made of stainless steel. Our columns give you the speed and control your process needs, whether you need to separate complicated chemical mixes or get back valuable solvents.

Working Principle

The chemistry fractionating column works by going through constant rounds of vapour and liquid balance. This is how you clean up your mixture:
Vaporization Stage: Your liquid blend goes into the bottom generator, which is heated in a controlled way to make vapour. Parts that have lower boiling points tend to evaporate first.
Ascending Vapour Path: As hot vapours rise through the dense column, they meet cooler liquids that are falling, which is called reflux. This makes a lot of touch points where mass can move.

Vapours collect in the cooling system at the top of the column. This is called reflux. Some of it goes back to the column as reflux liquid, which moves lighter components to the top and heavier ones to the bottom.
Theoretical Plates Work: Each layer of packing acts like a theoretical plate and goes through one cycle of melting and condensation. It is more pure when there are more plates. Our precise packing increases surface area while keeping the right amount of empty space to avoid floods.
Phase of Collection: The light fraction that has been cleaned gathers at the top receiver, while the larger fraction stays in the bottom reactor. PID temperature control makes sure that the separation stays fixed during the whole process.
Operation under vacuum: For chemicals that break down easily in heat, the built-in vacuum system lowers the boiling point. This stops thermal breakdown and keeps the separation efficiency high.

Process Flow
1. Feed Preparation → Load your mixture into the bottom reactor vessel
2. System Setup → Set target temperatures, reflux ratio, and vacuum level via PLC control panel
3. Heating Initiation → Activate heating system (electric/oil/steam) to reach operating temperature
4. Vapor Generation → Monitor vapor rise through transparent glass tower body
5. Reflux Establishment → Adjust reflux ratio for optimal separation versus throughput balance
6. Steady-State Operation → PID control maintains constant temperature zones throughout column
7. Product Collection → Draw purified fractions from designated collection points
8. Monitoring & Adjustment → Real-time observation through glass design allows immediate process optimization
9. Completion & Recovery → Collect residual fractions and prepare system for next batch

Application Fields
Petrochemical & Refining
Separate crude oil into precise fractions including naphtha, kerosene, and diesel. Our columns handle high thermal loads and corrosive sulfur compounds in True Boiling Point (TBP) distillation conforming to ASTM D2892 standards.
Pharmaceutical Production
Purify Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) to exacting standards. Recover expensive solvents like dichloromethane and ethyl acetate while removing synthesis by-products. Vacuum operation protects thermolabile compounds from degradation.

Essential Oils & Natural Products
Fractionate terpenes and oxygenated compounds in essential oils. Separate components like limonene from citral, achieving purities exceeding 99.9% while minimizing thermal exposure to delicate organic molecules.
Fine Chemical Synthesis
Process polysilicon precursors (TCS/DCS), produce high-purity chemical reagents, and isolate intermediates. The corrosion-resistant design handles aggressive acids, halogens, and organic solvents at elevated temperatures.

Each column undergoes comprehensive quality inspection before shipment, including vacuum leak testing, dimensional accuracy verification, and polariscope stress analysis for glass components.
FAQ
Q: What separation efficiency can I expect from your columns?
A: Separation efficiency depends on your packing choice and column height. Our structured packing achieves HETP values as low as 10cm. For components with boiling point differences under 5°C, we recommend taller columns with more theoretical plates. We'll calculate the exact number needed based on your mixture's relative volatility.
Q: How do I prevent flooding during operation?
A: Flooding happens when vapor velocity exceeds the column's capacity, filling it with liquid. Prevent this by reducing your heat input to lower the boil-up rate. Our PID control system helps maintain optimal vapor velocity. The transparent design lets you spot flooding immediately—you'll see liquid accumulation rather than clear vapor flow.
Q: Can your system separate azeotropic mixtures?
A: Standard distillation cannot break azeotropes like the 95% ethanol-water mixture. However, our vacuum capability enables pressure swing distillation, which shifts the azeotropic composition. For certain applications, we can integrate entrainer addition ports. Contact our technical team to discuss your specific azeotrope challenge.
Q: Which packing type should I choose?
A: Glass spring packing offers good efficiency and easy cleaning but lower capacity. Raschig rings are economical and robust but have higher HETP. Stainless steel θ rings provide the best balance of efficiency, capacity, and durability for most industrial applications. Avoid packed columns if your feed contains particulates—they'll cause fouling.
Q: What's included in your after-sales support?
A: We provide complete installation guidance, on-site commissioning (if required), and operator training. Technical support continues throughout your equipment's lifetime. Original spare parts ship quickly from our warehouse. Your dedicated specialist remains available for troubleshooting and process optimization advice.
Q: How do vacuum capabilities improve separation?
A: Operating under vacuum lowers boiling points significantly. This protects heat-sensitive compounds from decomposition while maintaining separation efficiency. Our systems reach 0.1mbar, allowing distillation of high-boiling materials at moderate temperatures. This extends equipment life and improves product quality.
